Since 2008, Weihai has successively held Triathlon events for 10 years. Weihai is the first city in Asia to successfully host the Long Distance Triathlon World Championships. It has created a record regarding the number of participants in the single triathlon races in China for many years, and has been appraised as the best national competition area with the first ranking of the total score in consecutive years. The course of triathlon in Weihai has been the designated course appointed by the China Triathlon Sports Association, and it is commented by the International Triathlon Union as “the most beautiful and challenging course in the world”. At present, Weihai Triathlon Competition has been appointed as the local featured sports event supported by Shandong Province. In 2015, it was awarded as the “Excellent Competition for China Sports Tourism in 2015”. The Weihai Triathlon Sports Association has successively won the Group Champion of the National Amateur Point Race for six years.
In order to enhance the marketization of the competition, in 2015 CPC Weihai Municipal Committee and Weihai Municipal Government promoted the establishment of Qidong City Brand Co., Ltd as a subsidiary of Weihai State-Owned Capital Operation Company, undertaking the Triathlon and other events, being responsible for the market operation and financial support of the events from 2016 onwards. Weihai Municipal Bureau of Finance will guarantee the funds for the basic competition for 3 years in a row. After 3 years, the competition will completely enter the stage of marketization. Weihai Triathlon will completely become marketization in 2019.
In 2017, Weihai Municipal Bureau of Sports actively sought the support from China Triathlon Sports Association, and bid for an international A-class event. In September 2017, with the approval of the International Triathlon Union and the State General Administration of Sport, Weihai will hold the 2018 Weihai Triathlon World Cup on September 22th, 2018.
This is an international A-class event and Olympic series. All the athletes from the world need to compete for Olympic points for Olympic qualifications. This is the first time for Weihai to hold this competition series. At the same time, in order to make the “Weihai Triathlon Competition” brand more renowned, and to promote the development the marketization and industrialization of the competition, Weihai will also launch Weihai Super Triathlon Series with Weihai Independent Intellectual Property from the afternoon of September 22nd to September 23rd. The competition will highlight the features with the highest bonuses and the most beautiful and challenging racing course in China, allowing the combination competition with professional and amateur athletes. According to the regulations, a maximum of 1800 athletes can participate in the 2018 Triathlon Competition. In order to ensure the smooth running of the event, Weihai Municipal Government has set up the Organizing Committee for the event. The Organizing Committee consists of 48 departments. The Mayor serves as the director of the Organizing Committee, and the Director of the Municipal Bureau of Sports serves as the director of the administration office. There are 12 offices under the organizing committee, including Administration Office, Competition Department, Publicity Department, Activity and Audience Service Department, Reception Department, Medical Care Department, Food Safety Department, Security Department, Marketing and Financial Department, Volunteer Organizing Department, Information Technology Department, and Comprehensive Service Department.
The History of Weihai Triathlon Competition
2008: The 2008 National Triathlon Tournament was held on the beach of Torch High-tech Industrial Park from 6th to 7th September. The competition was hosted by the Cycling and Fencing Administration Center of the General Administration of Sports of China, China Triathlon Sports Association, Shandong Administration of Sports and Weihai Municipal Government, organized by Weihai Municipal Sports Bureau. There were 350 athletes and over 300 leaders, coaches, officials, referees and volunteers from 25 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions participating in the competition.
2009: From 14th to 15th October, 2009, the Triathlon Competition of the 11th National Games of the People's Republic of China was held at the Halfmoon Bay in Weihai. 71 athletes from 15 teams national wide participated in the Competition. The Olympic Distance was introduced in the Competition for the first time, including 3 parts (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running), with the total distance of 51.5 km.
2010: 2010 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Cup was held in Halfmoon Bay 25th–26th September. 387 athletes from 25 countries and regions, including France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and other countries participated in the Competition. The champions of Women Groups were Jimmy Johnson from Danish and the Swiss player Stephen, and the Chinese contestant Shi Qingli ranked 8th in the Elite Men Group.
2011: 2011 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Cup was held 11th -12th June in Halfmoon Bay. The competition attracted 712 contestants from 22 countries and regions to participate in. After 4 hours fighting, Timitz Rossiakev, the Russian player in the Men Group, sprinted from behind, and in the final run overtook the first hit line of the other 2 leading Oceania rivals. Niwada Kiyomi, the Japanese athlete, a housewife and a triathlon fan, won the Women Championship. What’s more, she had just won the champion of Women Group Standard Distance Competition of Intercontinental Cup in the day before. For the Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Cup, she once again won the champion for the 103 km Course, showing the heroism of females which is as excellent as their male colleagues.
2012: 2012 Weihai Long distance Triathlon World Cup was launched at the Halfmoon Bay from 22nd to 23rd September. 892 domestic and foreign long-distance athletes and triathlon amateur took part in the competition. The Russian player Nicoles-ya Rodchenko was the first to complete the 103-kilometer triathlon course of the Men Group, and Tofte from Denmark and Alan Farrow from Australia ranked the second and the third places. For the Women Group, the Swiss Iron Man Carolyn Stephen won the championship, and Camilla Pederson from Denmark and Aiwa-Bagdor from Poland won the silver and bronze medals. Chinese athlete Wang Dan, from Liaoning Province, ranked the sixth place.
2013: 2013 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Cup was held in Halfmoon Bay from 28th to 29th September. 1107 athletes from 13 countries, including France, Britain, Germany, the United States, etc., competed in the competition. Chinese player Wang Dan won the bronze medal of the Elite Women Group with the record of 5 hours 1 minute 32 seconds, and Bagdor from Poland won the championship of the Elite Women Group. The gold medal of the Elite Men Group was claimed by the Danish athlete Rasmussen, with the record of 4 hours 06 minutes 36 seconds.
2014: 2014 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Championship was held in Halfmoon Bay from 20th to 21st September. 1408 athletes from 34 countries and regions, including Britain, Germany, the United States, France, etc., competed for the world championship. After a fierce competition, in the Competition of the National Championship on 20th, the male and female champions were won by contestants from Chinese Bayi(PLA) Team, with Kang Zhihang winning the championship of Men Group with the record of 2 hours 07 minutes 39 seconds 95 and Zhong Mengying winning the women's champion with the record of 2 hours 20 minutes 20 seconds 58. With the completion of Long Distance World Championships on 21st, the French player Berront won the male championship of the Professional Group with the record of 5 hours 09 minutes 09 seconds 15, the Danish female athlete Camilla won the female championship with the record of 5 hours 43 minutes 31 seconds 31.
2015: 2015 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Series was successfully held in Halfmoon Bay from 12th to 13th September. The course served for the 3 levels of competitions, including Long Distance World Series, National Championship and National Amateur Points Race, with 4 categories of competition distance, including long-distance, standard distance, sprint and experiential groups. There were 1511 athletes from 36 countries and regions enrolled in competitions of 6 professional groups and 32 amateur groups (with almost 200 foreign athletes and 485 Weihai athletes).
2016: 2016 Weihai Long Distance Triathlon World Series was successfully held in three professional courses of Halfmoon Bay from 10th to 11th September. There were 42 competition groups of both professional and amateur, with 1639 athletes of 102 teams from 30 countries and regions. There were 80712 national amateurs participating in the online experiential game through mobile phone app with a sound success.
2017: 2017 Weihai ITU Triathlon World Cup & “WEGO Real Estate Cup” 2017 Weihai Extreme Triathlon Series were successfully held in Weihai from 30th September to 1st October. The Competition covered 48 competition groups of both professional and amateur groups, with 1328 athletes from 34 countries and regions participating in the competition. There were 30000 national amateurs participating in the online experiential game through mobile phone app with a sound success.
